CLICHE WATCH

If I hear one more correspondent tell me that "a 19th century community has been dragged violently into the 21st century" I'm going to grow a beard, don a straw hat and move to Pennsylvania.

If you came here for molly-coddling senstivity, you probably came to the wrong place. Surely that's been made clear in the last few years.

Besides it was a comment on cheesy journalism, not on the fact that - in the States - any mentally unhinged nutcase with a 20-year-old score to settle can get their hands on a gun or two.

"Pennsylvania police are investigating why a gunman killed five girls at a rural primary school"

I wonder if the Penn police will be successful in discovering why. I do hope they'll then share the secret with the rest of us who would love to know the real reason for these U.S. school shootings which happen with such predictable regularity. The only newsworthy aspect of this latest one is the Amish slant and the novelty of that wore off after BBC World's first two hours of live tv coverage.

Maybe the Amricans will finally begin to realise that the basis of their bill of rights for everyone to arm themselves was understandable in 1776 but can never be acceptable in 2006. While I am not against gun ownership for sport or even hunting purposes, the wholesale acceptance of gon-toting in America has reached insane levels. In BC and Alberta, where I am working at the moment, they are having a gun amnesty to try and take previously unregistered guns out of circulation - maybe America should try it - except the gun lobby is stringer than the common-sense lobby.

Sorry, need to get one of the kids to spellcheck me before I post!
