Salamanders and many fish species have stem cell populations that are able to be marshaled for a number of purposes related to regeneration. Perhaps most impressively, they can even regenerate portions of their central nervous system including the retina when damaged. The fascinating thing about retinal regeneration is that they have much more sophisticated eyes than our simple three color percept retinas.
