THE RIGHT TO LIFE....SOMETIMES

"The case of Terri Schiavo raises complex issues....our society, our laws, and our courts should have a presumption in favor of life." George W. Bush, 18th March 2005.

"I support the death penalty...because it saves lives." George W Bush, 21st June 2000.

Stu I don't think no one will be suprised that Bush can hold such contradictory and ridiculous positions.
The schiavo case is difficult though. It seems that the husband had moved on, why couldn't he just let her parents take care of their daughter? It would have been no concern to him.

I have seen your argument before... has it ever occured to you that the husband cares for her as much as the parents do? It may very well be that he may ACTUALLY love the woman he married and she will always be a concern for him.

He recognizes that being in a persistent vegetative state goes against her wishes... he is caring for her by letting her die with dignity, as he says she wanted.

The selfish people here are the parents who cannot let go nor, apprently, can they realize they are keeping her alive in order to satisfy their own wishes... not hers.

James there seems to be a lot more to this story than meets the eye.
Just follow the links given on the bbc story.
But parental love is not something that should be sniped at.

sorry pressed the publish button too soon.

Quite frankly the public will never know the truth about this sad case.
But seriously james for someone who puts a charity like CPI as his link, and then snipes at the love that these parents have for their daughter - confounds me!

I am not sniping at the love of the parents. But the husband loves her as well, and is her legal guardian in this case, chosen by her.

I am saying their desires are perhaps selfish as they cannot let go. I feel for them...I love my kids... God forbid I would ever in their situation.

But if my wife had told me she would never want to be in this situation, I would fight as hard as he is.

As I said we will never know what happened in the Schiavo's relationship. Nor will we ever know what Terri wanted as no will was left behind, so it seems.
But if this man 'loves' his wife so much why couldn't he just compromise with her parents instead of being so dogmatic?
After all what love is greater than the love of a mother for her child? Why couldn't he show compassion to the woman who gave birth to his 'wife'? I don't approve of the hijaacking of this case by politicians but I just can't see why her husband couldn't have taken on board the wishes of his 'wife's' parents.

The husband is due $1 million upon her death. That's not made the BBC's take on the story.

The party of G. W. Bush has repeatedly made clear their commitment to the "sancity of marriage".

When you get married, you are putting your faith in the other person to make decisions for you... to speak for you when necesary.

The representative for this poor woman is her husband, and if that had been honored to begin with, the family would have long been spared this agony.

All sorts of accusations can be raised about anyone's motivations. But if we are to honor the "sanctity of marriage" (that has thus far enabled US right wing to justify their blatant bigotry) then the decision lies with the husband.

However flawed some people may find him, the decision is legally, and ethically his. That decision does not belong to me, not you, "anonymous" and certainly not to the Congress of the United States of America.

Last time I checked the old marriage vows, you are suppose to forsake all others, that also includes girlfriends.
Also if we follow the premise of your argument, a scenario comes to mind where an abusive husband could dictate the medical treatment of an incapacitated wife. NOT TALKING ABOUT THE SCHIAVO CASE HERE !!!
But not all domestic abuse cases are detected or acted upon by medical authorities.
The courts should have appointed a guardian for Terri and then made their decision based on the guardian's findings.
As I have said I have no time for bush and his idiotic rhetoric. But I just can not comprehend her 'husband's' behaviour, especially towards her family.

I should also explain that I just don't believe in marriage, so the basis for my views. I just find it unnatural that just because your man and wife, a presumption exists which gives you so much legal power over another person. People should be made to appoint a legal 'next of kin'. A presumption over your children I can understand but another adult - no, unless it is expressly stated that is your wish.
